Super surprising trivia about the unexplained
By Megan Cooley Peterson

Introduction by Librarian

In “Super Surprising Trivia About the Unexplained”, Megan Cooley Peterson explores a wide variety of real-life mysteries across four chapters: “What is this place?”, “Mysterious mummies”, “Missing!”, and “Are these creatures real?” Each chapter looks at different unsolved mysteries around the world, from Stonehenge, the ancient monument on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, to the Plain of Jars, a vast archaeological landscape in Laos. As Peterson states on the first page, “Secrets lie in every corner of the world.” For those of us in Hong Kong, it is hard to refute this statement. The ancient rock carvings at Tung Lung Chau, Cape Collinson, and Big Wave Bay, as well as the legendary Cheung Po Tsai Cave on Cheung Chau, all remind us that mysteries are often closer than we imagine.

The book is written in a lively, easy-to-read style, with plenty of photographs and short facts that make it perfect for children who enjoy exploring at their own pace. Since each chapter is independent, you can read them in any order. There is a glossary that lists key terms and their meanings from the book, along with a short section called “Find out more” that recommends books and websites for further exploration. Rather than offering a definitive answer or making the mysteries seem daunting, Peterson presents the facts in a friendly, open manner that leaves room for readers to think independently. Therefore, this book is a good choice for young readers who are curious about the world and love to ask questions.

If you enjoy mystery stories, this book will provide a pleasant way to keep exploring and learning about the world.
