Is the human nature good or evil? "Lord of the Flies" written by Nobel Prize-winning British author, William Golding sheds lights on this issue.

This book opens with a plane full of British schoolboys crashing on an uninhabited island. With no adults surviving the crash, the boys are left to themselves to try to stay alive and make attempts for rescue. Initially, the boys are able to live by rules, act peacefully and follow moral commands. But as the story progresses, the boys are changing from well-behaved, orderly children to being cruel, wild and violent.

The two main characters of "Lord of the Flies" are Ralph and Jack. Ralph is the protagonist and represents civilization. Jack is the antagonist and symbolizes savagery and violence. Throughout the book is the theme of civilization versus savagery, or good versus evil. It shows us that evil dwells in every human being, even children.

In fact, all of us have the capacity to do good or evil. Undeniably, all of us have a dark side. What is important is to be aware of our weaknesses and prevent evil from taking control of ourselves. We can always choose to do good things instead of bad things.

Will evil prevail in the end of this novel? Read it and you will know.
