If you ask kids what Rock and Roll is, many might shrug or say they are not sure. Some people believe Rock and Roll is fading away or isn’t as popular as it used to be. This book is a fun and simple way to introduce young readers to the world of rock music—what it sounds like, where it came from, and how it has changed over time.
Here are some fun facts about Rock and Roll:
🎵 Rock and Roll was born in the 1950s;
🎙️ Elvis Presley was a truck driver before becoming a superstar;
🎸 Electric guitars are rock’s best friends;
💎 Jimi Hendrix was left-handed but played right-handed guitars flipped upside down;
⚡ David Bowie had two different-colored eyes;
🕺 Michael Jackson invented the Moonwalk.
I grew up surrounded by the sounds of rock music in all its forms. Along the way, I have navigated many styles—from classic rock to glam, hard rock to alternative—and some of those songs still live in my playlists today. Depending on how I feel, I press play on “Hotel California” to drift into its haunting melody, or “Slave to Love” when I crave something tender and cinematic. “With or Without You” carries me through the ache of longing. “Don’t Stop Believin’” lifts me with hope, while “Don’t Look Back in Anger” reminds me to let go of the past.
Two songs that have stayed with me over the years are “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “November Rain.” Both were created by the legendary rock band Guns N’ Roses, yet they offer very different moods. “Sweet Child o’ Mine” bursts with energy and joy from the very first guitar riff. “November Rain” is like a movie soundtrack. It is slower, deeper, with a powerful guitar solo that I never get tired of listening to.
Rock music has a special way of connecting with my thoughts. For me, it is more than sound, as it is tied to feelings and memories. As you finish this book, take a moment to find a rock song that truly speaks to you. Let’s share it with someone close, or keep it as your personal anthem.
