Most people consider the magnificent harbor nightscape as the charm of the Pearl of the Orient, while the first-generation local art master and educator Mr. KONG Kai Ming finds the true beauty of Hong Kong in its natural landscape.
“The vitality of Hong Kong: a collection of "Hong Kong's nature" consists of a series of Hong Kong natural landscape sketched by Kong since 2011. When Kong and his remarkable watercolour style encounter the astonishing sceneries of Hong Kong countryside covering the sea, the land and the air, one can instantly feel his passion for nature and his devotion and sentiment towards Hong Kong, the place where he is born and raised.
The naming of the series highlights his philosophy of art and emphasis on “spirituality”. The hundreds of breathtaking masterpieces showcasting the vitalizing views in the city are simply a feast for the eyes, from the macaques of Kam Shan to the egrets and herons in Lai Chi Wo, from the Southern Po Toi Island reaching to the Northern Luk Keng, Kong recreates his impression of the symphony of nature in the form of drawings hoping that readers would discover and cherish the blessings from mother nature in the city.
Kong believes the true beauty has to be reproduced by realistic portrayal of the true life. His style is clearly shown in the work of sedimentary rock of Tung Ping Chau, which captures the texture and colour spectrum of the geographical treasure reflecting the radiance from heaven. Comparing with photographs or digital paintings, Kong’s drawings reveal an alternative reading of Hong Kong landscape in a more living and vitalizing approach, known as the “spirit”. His blessing to the hometown is also embedded in the “vitality and vigour” of the Lion Rock surrounding by the symbols of the city – bauhinia, azaleas, kapok trees and conifers.
Let’s flip a page of the book. Not only art lovers, nature lovers or local culture admirers, you may also be inspired by the journey to this blessed land and experience a sense of spiritual infinity.
