A child’s imagination knows no bounds, but inspiration is key. In How to Write a Story, the author simplifies the journey to becoming a writer by guiding readers through the process of selecting a story idea, choosing a setting, developing a problem for the main character, and ultimately resolving the problem. The author made writing sound simple: “You can write about something you love. Or something that scares you. Don’t worry if not all your ideas are shiny. Sometimes you have to collect a lot to figure out what works best.” This methodical approach demystifies the writing process, empowering children to express their creativity with confidence. The author’s warm and encouraging tone instills the belief in young readers that they can craft a compelling story too.
For those who love reading, I am sure that becoming a writer was once a childhood dream. When I was young, after devouring numerous storybooks, I started dreaming that one day I would become a writer, that one day my name as an author would appear on the cover of a beautiful book filled with creative illustrations. However, just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, you won’t become a writer simply by wishing to be one. Good writing requires nurturing from an early age, and following the simple guidance in the book is an excellent starting point for anyone aspiring to become a writer.
The combination of text and images in this book enables children to visualize their own stories. For example, in Step 2 which is about choosing a setting for the story, the illustrator has created four settings, including a soccer field, an art museum, outer space and an aquarium. These illustrations inspire children to visualize their stories vividly in their minds.
There is a writer in every child. This book will help your child let the writer out by creating captivating stories and nurturing a lifelong passion for writing.
