By Hong Kong Observatory, Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department

Introduction by Librarian

The natural environment of Hong Kong is a treasure for everyone and it has rich habitats for various kinds of terrestrial and marine species. However, it is very fragile due to the impact of climate change.

"Climate change and biodiversity in Hong Kong" is a photo album co-authored by the Hong Kong Observatory and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. They aim to bring out the idea of greener lifestyle to the public, encourage every citizen to be responsible towards nature and improve our living environment together. The authors introduce a series of phenomenon of global climate change with lively examples, describe the rising threats of climate warming and how the impact affects human beings, different species and the whole ecosystem.

An accurate understanding of climate change and biodiversity is the foundation for people to take action for combating climate change and conserving biodiversity. Scientific information is provided throughout the book. For example, the relationship between ocean warming and geographical distribution of marine organisms, disruption of ecological processes, reasons why the habitats of many species have been destroyed, consequence of climate change to migratory birds and importance of mangroves. The writing style is concise and the scientific knowledge is introduced in plain languages. It provides a good reading experience and readers can understand the contents easily.

By using beautiful photos and resourceful links to relevant websites and videos, this book presents the wonderful biodiversity of Hong Kong. The book also demonstrates how government departments and citizens can make contributions to combat climate change and conserve biodiversity. I highly recommend this book to you and hope all of us would share the importance of biodiversity with others. After reading this book, I wish you would adopt low-carbon lifestyle, protect our nature and build a sustainable Hong Kong together.
